French belongs to the Indo-European family of languages and is a Romance language. Like all Romance languages, it is descended from Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire. Gallo-Romance, the Latin spoken in Gaul, and particularly in Northern Gaul, influenced the development of French. French was also impacted by the (Germanic) Frankish language of the post-Roman Frankish conquerors, as well as native Celtic languages of Northern Roman Gaul such as Gallia Belgica. There are various French-based creole languages today, most notably Haitian Creole, thanks to France’s historical colonial expansion.

French is the official language of 29 countries across multiple continents, the majority of which are members of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a group of 84 countries that share the official usage or teaching of the language. The United Nations uses French as one of its six official languages. In France, Canada, western Switzerland, portions of Luxembourg, sections of the United States, Monaco, the Aosta Valley region of Italy, and numerous communities elsewhere, it is spoken as a first language .
